What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol

Overview

If you've landed here, something brought you. Maybe you've been in therapy for years and still feel like your body hasn't caught up with your mind. Maybe anxiety is your constant companion — even on the good days. Maybe you've tried the breathing exercises, the journaling, the medication, and something still feels just out of reach.

I want to talk about something that might be the missing piece. It's called the Safe and Sound Protocol, and it's one of the most powerful tools I've added to my practice as a licensed therapist in over 15 years of clinical work.

Let me walk you through what it is, how it works, and — honestly — whether it might be right for you.

What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?

The Safe and Sound Protocol, often called SSP therapy, is an evidence-based listening intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the neuroscientist behind Polyvagal Theory. It was designed to calm the nervous system by working directly through the auditory pathway — the part of your biology that's constantly scanning the environment for signals of safety or danger.

In simple terms: SSP uses specially filtered music to retrain the tiny muscles of your middle ear to better detect the frequencies associated with human connection and safety. When your nervous system picks up those frequencies, it gets a signal it can relax. That it's okay to come out of defense mode.

It's not talk therapy. It's not meditation. It works at a level below conscious thought — which is exactly why it reaches places that other approaches sometimes can't.

The Science Behind SSP — Polyvagal Theory Made Simple

To understand why SSP works, it helps to understand a little about Polyvagal Theory.

Your autonomic nervous system operates in three states:

Ventral Vagal — Safe and Social
This is your baseline state when you feel genuinely calm, connected, and present. Your digestion works well. You sleep. You can be in a room full of people and feel okay.

Sympathetic — Fight or Flight
This is your body's threat response. Heart rate up, muscles braced, mind racing. It's designed to protect you — but when you're stuck here chronically, it's exhausting.

Dorsal Vagal — Shutdown and Freeze
This is the deepest layer of defense — numbness, disconnection, collapse. Often what people describe as depression or dissociation.

Most people with chronic anxiety are toggling between states two and three, with very little access to state one. SSP is specifically designed to help your nervous system find its way back to ventral vagal — the state where healing, connection, and real rest are actually possible.

What Does an SSP Session Actually Look Like?

This is one of the questions I get most often, and I love that people ask it — because it's genuinely different from anything most people have experienced in a therapeutic setting.

You listen. That's it.

You put on a pair of over-ear headphones and listen to specially filtered music for about 30 to 60 minutes per session. The music sounds pleasant — often familiar. But underneath what you consciously hear, the filtering is doing something very specific to your middle ear and your nervous system.

Most people describe feeling calm, a little spacey, sometimes emotional. Some notice they're tired afterward as the nervous system processes and integrates. A few notice very little in the moment — and then realize two days later that something feels different.

As a certified SSP facilitator, I'm with you through every step of the process. We don't just hand you headphones and walk away. The relationship between client and facilitator is actually a core part of how SSP works — co-regulation is built into the protocol itself.

Who Is SSP For?

SSP therapy has been used with over 100,000 people across more than 70 countries. It's been applied across a wide range of presentations, and the research continues to grow.

In my private practice at The Well Sessions, SSP tends to be a beautiful fit for people who:

  • Experience chronic anxiety that doesn't fully resolve with talk therapy alone

  • Feel hypervigilant — always scanning, always bracing, always waiting for something to go wrong

  • Are highly sensitive or easily overwhelmed by noise, crowds, or social input

  • Struggle with sleep, digestion, or body tension that seems disconnected from what's happening in their life

  • Have a trauma history and feel stuck even after doing significant healing work

  • Find that connection with others feels draining rather than restoring

  • Are high-functioning on the outside but quietly exhausted on the inside

SSP pairs beautifully with existing therapeutic work — EMDR, somatic therapy, individual therapy, occupational therapy. Many of my clients use it alongside their current work with another provider.

Who Should Wait on SSP?

Honesty matters to me, so I want to be clear here too.

SSP may not be the right fit right now if you are currently in an acute mental health crisis, actively destabilized, or in a period of significant life upheaval. The protocol requires some baseline capacity for regulation, and we always assess that together before beginning.

This is one of the reasons working with a licensed SSP facilitator — rather than attempting to navigate the protocol alone — matters so much. A trained facilitator can pace the process to your nervous system, not a generic timeline.

Is SSP Covered by Insurance?

SSP is not covered by insurance. There is no billing code associated with it, and it is an out-of-pocket investment. Some clients use HSA or FSA funds toward the cost.

I know that can feel like a barrier. I also know that for many of the people I work with, it ends up being one of the most meaningful investments they've made in their own healing — because it reaches something that years of other approaches couldn't fully touch.

What's Included in My SSP Program

At The Well Sessions, the Nervous System Reset is a complete 6-week SSP program that includes:

  • A 60-minute nervous system intake assessment

  • The full SSP Core 5-hour listening protocol, paced to your system

  • Weekly check-in sessions throughout the program

  • Between-session email support

  • A personalized integration plan and resource library

  • A closing session to consolidate your progress

The investment is $500 for the complete program. Virtual sessions are available — all you need is a quiet space and a pair of over-ear headphones.

I work with clients across the United States virtually, and I bring 15+ years of clinical experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor into every session.

So — Is SSP Right for You?

If you've read this far, your nervous system probably already has an answer.

The clients who tend to get the most from SSP are the ones who have already done a lot of work on themselves — and still feel like something is missing. They're self-aware, motivated, and ready to try something that works at a different level entirely.

If that sounds like you, I'd love to have a conversation.

I offer a free 20-minute call to explore whether SSP is a good fit — no pressure, no commitment. Just an honest conversation about where you are and what might help.
